Seattle Repertory Theatre is proud to present The Road to Mecca, inspired by the true story of South Africa's most well-known outsider artist, Helen Martins. The play tells the story of the reclusive artist, who was ostracized by her rural community for her fantastical house. Using found objects and taking inspiration from poetry, religion, and animal imagery, Helen built over 300 sculptures in her yard, and transformed the interior of her home with ground colored glass and mirrors to reflect light. The play's set is practically a fourth character, and draws its inspiration from Helen's real-life house.
